Winter Does More Damage Than Summer Heat
Central Indiana does not simply get cold. It crosses the freezing line back and forth, sometimes several times in a week. That is the part that breaks countertops.
Water works its way into pores and micro fissures, expands when it freezes, and pushes the stone apart from the inside. One cycle does nothing visible. Sixty of them over four winters open a hairline into a crack.
So the question is not which stone looks best outside. It is which stone absorbs the least water and stays stable under UV.
The Material That Wins Indoors Loses Outdoors
The 2025 U.S. Houzz Kitchen Trends Study put engineered quartz at 39% among renovating homeowners, the most popular countertop surface in the country by a wide margin. It is an excellent indoor surface.
It is the wrong call outside. Quartz is bound with resins, and sustained UV exposure fades and yellows them. Quartz manufacturers generally do not approve their slabs for outdoor installation.
We would rather say that up front than let you find it out in year three.
Granite Is Our First Recommendation
Granite is dense, UV stable, and has been sitting outdoors in far worse climates than ours for a very long time. It is what you will see in most of the projects in our outdoor countertop gallery, including bars, grill surrounds, and fireplace surfaces.
Color choice is worth thinking through. A dark polished granite in full afternoon sun gets hot enough that nobody wants to lean on it.
Pro Tip: Ask for a flamed or leathered finish on an outdoor top instead of a polished one. The textured surface runs cooler in direct sun, hides the water spotting that an uncovered counter will get every time it rains, and gives you grip when the top is wet. It also takes sealer more evenly on the exposed edges.
