Granite Is Still Holding Its Ground in Indiana Kitchens
The 2025 U.S. Houzz Kitchen Trends Study found granite in 19% of renovating homeowners’ kitchens, second only to engineered quartz at 39% and ahead of quartzite at 11%.
Most of the homeowners who ask us about maintenance are really asking one question: how much work is this going to be? The honest answer is less than you have been told, but not zero.
Sealing Is the Only Recurring Task That Matters
We seal every top with a non-toxic penetrating sealer before it goes into your home. The sealer does not coat the surface. It soaks in and slows how fast liquids travel into the stone.
After that, plan on reapplying a penetrating sealer at least once a year. It is a twenty minute job with a soft cloth, not a project.
Pro Tip: Stone has to be bone dry before you reseal. Sealer applied over residual moisture cures into a cloudy haze that has to be stripped off. Give the top a full 24 hours with no wiping, no damp rags, and no sink splash before you start.
Not Every Granite Needs the Same Schedule
Absorption varies more between two granites than it does between granite and quartzite. A dense black rarely takes sealer at all. A light, open-grained slab with a lot of movement can drink it.
Test yours instead of guessing. Pour a tablespoon of water on the counter, wait fifteen minutes, and wipe it. If the stone underneath darkened, it is ready for sealer. If it beaded and left nothing behind, wait a few more months.
Run that test in two places: an open field of the counter and the area right next to the sink. They almost never come back the same.

Daily Cleaning Is Simpler Than the Cleaning Aisle Suggests
A few drops of neutral stone cleaner or mild dish soap in warm water handles everything. Rinse thoroughly, then dry with a soft cloth.
Too much soap is the most common mistake we see. It leaves a film that reads as streaking, and homeowners respond by adding more product.
Skip anything with vinegar, lemon, or other acids, and skip bathroom cleaners, grout cleaners, and abrasive powders. Blot spills when they happen, especially oil, wine, and citrus.
What Actually Damages Granite
Heat is rarely the problem. Staining and edge chips are.
Oil is the real threat because it moves into the stone slowly and shows up days later as a dark shadow. Standing water is the second, particularly along seams and around an undermount sink rail.
Pro Tip: The three feet of counter beside a dishwasher takes more abuse than any other run in the kitchen. Opening the door mid cycle sends steam straight up under the front edge, which is the one area homeowners never wipe or reseal. Include the underside of that overhang when you seal, and wait for the cycle to finish before you open the door.
Decisions You Make Before Fabrication Affect Maintenance
Seam placement, edge profile, and overhang support all change how your counters age. A seam dropped into the middle of a wet zone will need attention. The same seam moved eighteen inches will not.
Finish matters too. Polished granite hides water spotting and fingerprints better than honed or leathered, which look excellent and ask for more frequent wiping.
Pro Tip: Ask about overhang support before you fall in love with a bar top. Our shop rule is that unsupported overhang past about ten inches on 3cm stone gets corbels or a steel plate. Cabinet installers rarely plan for that, and it is far cheaper to solve at template than after the slab is set.
See the Slab Before You Commit
We lay out every project with a laser template system and cut it on our CNC, so you approve the layout before the stone is touched. Come see the inventory in person. Photos flatten movement, and movement is what you live with.
Browse our granite countertop selection, compare it against quartzite if durability is your priority, and review our stone care and maintenance guidelines before you decide.
